When Stranger Things debuted on Netflix in 2016, it quickly established itself as one of the platform’s defining series. Nearly a decade later, the show concludes with a finale that largely succeeds in delivering a satisfying and emotionally coherent ending — an achievement many long-running series fail to manage.
The final episode is confident in its storytelling, favouring character-driven resolution over shock value. Loose ends are addressed with care, and the conclusion feels considerably more assured than those of comparable genre series such as Game of Thrones or The Handmaid’s Tale. Rather than attempting to subvert expectations, the Duffer Brothers focus on emotional payoff and narrative closure.
Character relationships remain the core strength of the finale. Key moments — including Steve’s fall from the tower and his rescue by Jonathan — reinforce the themes of loyalty and friendship that have defined the series since its inception. Max’s return to her physical form to help defeat Vecna and prevent the collapse of the world provides one of the episode’s most emotionally charged sequences, combining tension with long-earned catharsis.

The mythology also receives long-awaited clarification. The complex relationship between Henry / Vecna / 001 and the Mind Flayer is finally explained, with the reveal inside the cave’s metal case serving as a pivotal and effective narrative payoff. For viewers familiar with The First Shadow stage production, which expands on Henry’s origins, this moment carries added depth.
Notably, the finale allows space for moral complexity. Will’s attempt to reason with Henry highlights the tragedy of a character who is ultimately beyond redemption, making his death feel sorrowful rather than triumphant. Some questions remain unresolved — particularly regarding Will’s survival despite his shared connection to Henry — but these ambiguities are relatively minor.

The episode’s most striking moment comes with Joyce’s brutal defeat of Vecna, a sequence that stands among the most memorable in the series. The epilogue that follows offers a restrained and bittersweet farewell, prioritising emotional resonance over spectacle.
Final Verdict: Stranger Things concludes by embracing what has always defined it — character, emotion, and narrative sincerity. Though not without minor flaws, the finale delivers an earned, resonant conclusion that respects both its characters and its audience. It stands as a strong example of how to close a long-running series with confidence and heart.
Additionally, I am saddened to know that WSQK radio station will cease to exist after 11pm tonight (01/01/2026). I barely listen to the radio, but this station became something special — much like Stranger Things itself.

This show is rated 5 stars.
