Happy Death Day 2U (2019)

Written by: Christopher Landon & Scott Labdell

Directed by: Christopher Landon

Starring: Jessica Rothe, Isreal Broussard, Phi Vu, Suraj Sharma.

Happy Death Day 2U is the second film in the Happy Death Day series (2017), with the return of Jessica Rothe, who plays a character called Tree Gelbman, where she finds herself back in the same college accommodation room, thankful to be alive. However, this time, it’s Carter’s roommate, Ryan, who is now reliving the same paradox day over and over again, as a mysterious and paranoid killer wearing a single-toothed baby-faced mask and holding a big kitchen knife has made a habit of murdering him.

To fix this, and stop reliving the same day over and over again, Tree works with some scientists at the college, including Ryan, to try to break the continuous loop, close other alternative universes, and live life normally again.

After watching the first film when it was released in 2017, I was looking forward to seeing this one, but I felt a little disappointed after watching it. Admittedly, I did laugh at a few scenes, which were funny, but I had to really focus my attention on staying engaged with the film to the end, and it was a struggle at times. I don’t feel this film lives up to the hype after watching the first movie.

As I do with all my reviews, please do not rely solely on this review, as it reflects only my personal opinion. If you are indecisive about watching Death Day 2U, I would recommend giving it a watch, as you may enjoy it, as it is more comedy than horror, but it ultimately comes down to individual taste.
