Barbie and Ken are having the time of their life, living in Barbieland; however, when they get the opportunity to exit into the real world, they quickly discover the joys and issues of living among real humans.
During the promotion of this film, I did initially find it silly, however, as the release date became closer I warmed to the film and became excited about seeing it in the cinema.
I had not long started dating my long-term partner at the time, and what was even better was that the film was released the day before my Birthday, 20th July.
On my birthday, 21st July, my partner and I went to see this. Seeing this film was one of the first dates I had with my partner – he even showed up at the cinema wearing a pink T-shirt, which was great!
I remember the cinema room being full with people wearing pink, and majority of the men in the room were adhering to the dress code of “wear something pink” which added to the anticipation of the film.
IT WAS FANTASTIC.

As this movie came out at the same time as Oppenheimer, and we watched both movies, me and my partner (still to this day) agree Barbie was the better movie of the two.
I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish, it was a very fun, light-hearted film, with a LOT OF PINK, which I also have to admit I was very tempted to purchase all things Barbie after this film – I didn’t because I am a grown woman, and it would not be a good sight to see a grown woman playing with dolls! LOL. Instead, Starbucks were selling bright pink reusable cups, which I still have and still love.
I did want some of the fluorescent yellow and pink roller blades, which I never had the chance to purchase. I have got a “I am Kenough” hood though, which is very cosy!
Barbie was a weirdly fun movie, and I have watched it a few more times since it has been released on DVD/Blu-Ray and digital download, and each time it is more fun to watch.
I have to admit, I absolutely love Ryan Gosling now, and his way of keeping the hype alive by continuing to be Ken at events, such as at the Oscars, last year, was great – which I have to admit, I watch daily – I love it so much. Below is a video of Ryan Gosling as Ken at the Oscars.
Fun Fact: All the “Kens” in the background are the actors who played the different Kens from the movie. No Alan, unfortunately.
I really hope they do a second movie at some point. The success of this film was amazing, and I am very excited for any potential follow-up film, maybe a story around Ken and how he adapts to life without Barbie? Maybe he enters the real world and ends up involved in the influencer world, creating a men’s self-help group, or he somehow gets into politics and becomes the next leader of the USA?
Overall, my review on this film is positive and I hope a new movie is being thought up, as we speak. It was fun to watch and continues to be.
I rate this film 5 out of 5 stars.
