A young, troubled teenager (Gyllenhaal) narrowly misses a bizarre accident and is plagued by visions of a human-sized rabbit who manipulates him into committing various crimes.
After not having seen this film for years, I decided to watch it on Halloween night, October 31st. As I have fond memories of seeing this film years ago and feeling uneasy after watching it, I still hold the same view after rewatching Donnie Darko. It is a bizarre film, for me anyway, but I love that this is one of the earliest films in Jake Gyllenhaal’s career.

I purchased this film on Amazon Prime Video in UHD 4K, which was enjoyable to watch. However, I still felt uneasy and confused after seeing it again. It’s a challenging film to explain and discuss because it lends itself to multiple interpretations for different people. Even Seth Rogen and Jake Gyllenhaal have both openly stated, and agree, that they have no idea what the movie was about (according to IMDb trivia).
This, for me, will always be one of my top films to watch for Halloween, but also a film that’ll always leave my mind wondering afterwards and leaving more questions than answers.
If you haven’t seen this film or heard about it, then where have you been hiding for the past 20 years? I highly recommend this film, especially if you are a fan of Seth Rogen, Drew Barrymore, and Jake Gyllenhaal. This is definitely one to see and experience the weirdness that we all have experienced after watching this film.
I rate this film 4.5 stars
